Freeze mob organised by Education Tree at Cannaught Place in Delhi

It was an unusual sight to see around 40 students from various schools and colleges in the NCR being chaperoned from Connaught Place to Jantar Mantar. But that’s exactly what happened when a freeze mob was organised by Education Tree at CP to mark two years of the Nirbhaya rape case.

As the students were about to start the freeze mob, they were interrupted by cops, who asked them to move to Jantar Mantar.The cops also asked the participants to not display any placards at the spot without getting them checked by the police officials, while asking the organisers for a permit. Mithun, a cop who stopped the freeze mob, said, “This is for a good cause and we get that. But there is high security in CP due to the Republic Day celebrations. They can head to Jantar Mantar, which is a designated spot for these kinds of protests.”
After 15 minutes of pleading, the cops gave in and asked the participants to proceed to another block, have their freeze mob and proceed to Jantar Mantar. But that’s when another police official came to the spot and escorted the students to Jantar Mantar, complete with cop cars paving a way for the mob members through CP. Kunal Arora, one of the three DU graduates who founded the organisation, said, “We knew the cops would stop us. We were informed in the morning that Section 144 has been implemented in this area and we would have to move our event to Jantar Mantar. But we wanted to give it a shot and manage at least one freeze mob in CP.”
Once at Jantar Mantar the mob members faced no interference from the cops. Said Payal*, a DU student, “I was scared that we were going to get arrested. I’m glad we didn’t! At least we got to do the freeze mob, even though it wasn’t in CP.”
